Choosing shoes
Finding the right shoe size can be tricky. Here are a few basic tips.
1. Always shop for shoes in the late afternoon. Feet spread and swell markedly as the day goes on, so this is the ideal time to try and buy.
2. Do try both shoes on! Your left and right foot will differ in size, sometimes as much as 10mm.
3. If you do have one foot a half or full size bigger, then always buy the shoes to fit the bigger foot.
4. Never buy a shoe that is slightly tight fitting, thinking it will give. Synthetic shoes will never give. Leather will soften, but wont create extra room for squashed toes, or a pinched instep!
5. A good tip when breaking in new shoes, is to wear them with a pair of thick socks. Totter around the home in, and in no time, they'll be fit for your big night out - and no blisters!
6. Another tip, this time from a friend, is to keep a small tin of petroleum jelly in your handbag. If you do feel a blister coming on, rub the petroleum jelly on the affected area, and the shoe, and this should help matters until you can get home!
7. If you have wide feet, buy wide fitting footwear! You will however, be able to wear most standard sized toe post sandals or flip flops.
8. If you have large calf's, where boots are concerned, remember that the higher up the leg the boot goes, the less likely it is to do up! In this case, buy from a specialist shop that supplies larger widths. |
